Erotic thrillers predominantly are my domain: Emraan Hashmi

Emraan Hashmi is an actor who is known more for – well, nothing new there – his kissing and intimate scenes on screen than his acting. In several films by now, Emraan – the Kisser has ended up overshadowing Emraan – the Actor. But Hashmi believes that with women, it’s always better to maintain a diplomatic stand. The actor will soon be seen in Vishesh Films’ next – ‘Raaz 3’ – and admits being very hopeful of its prospects. Ananya Bhattacharya of Zeenews.com spoke to Emraan Hashmi about the film, and a lot more. Excerpts from the interview:

Your liaison with Bollywood began at the age of 18 – as an assistant director on the sets of ‘Raaz’. You’ve been there in the second part, and you’re here now in ‘Raaz 3’. How does it feel to be so closely associated with the franchise?

I’ve seen the franchise take birth. That was kind of my birth as an actor also. I love the genre, I love horror. So being part of it in the second one was a dream come true. And then after that, Vikram Bhatt came back with the franchise. I guess he’s put in all the elements to make it a commercial potboiler and not just a horror film. There’s the element of thrill in it, there’s romance, great music, everything that makes it exciting. Also the fact that the film is in 3D, which could be a huge draw. People, I’m sure, have never seen this kind of 3D in Bollywood before. Vikram has really done a fantastic job with ‘Raaz 3’.

You shot to fame with an erotic thriller – ‘Murder’. Do you feel comfortable with the genre?

I’ve always felt comfortable. I’ve never really had any inhibition playing any character in an erotic thriller. Erotic thrillers predominantly are my domain – I’ve started off with that and pursued it, and it’s great that I’ve also somewhere benefited a lot from it. But I’ll always try to work with other genres also, try my hand at that and try to make that successful. But I feel I’ll eventually always have to come back to this since the audience associates me with that. So I’d say it’s a bit of everything.

Was it easy or difficult coming back to the brand called ‘Raaz’?

There were expectations, I’m sure huge ones. It’s a fantastic film to be associated with, but there was no pressure as such. At the back of your mind, you know that there’s certain connectivity with the audience. Perceivably, probably it’s a niche, but this is more of a mainstream film. So as far as the script is concerned and the way the film was being shot, the screenplay and all – it’s very commercial.

Roping you in a film sort of guarantees it’s musical success. Since the time you’ve been around, almost all your films have been musical blockbusters. Do you too contribute anything to the music of your films?

No, no. I don’t have anything to do with the music. I don’t choose the music directors or the tracks. All of it has just happened. And eventually, thankfully, all of that has worked so far.

You are one of the most popular actors in the industry today. And with ‘Shanghai’, you’ve succeeded in breaking away from the mould people generally associate you with. The character of Joginder Parmar was poles apart from what people have seen you doing. How challenging was it?

It was very challenging. It wasn’t anything even remotely close to what I’ve usually been doing over the years. I didn’t understand that character; it’s not a part of the world I’ve grown up in. Playing a character like the one in ‘Raaz 3’ is probably closer because it’s an urban character. But ‘Shanghai’ was very tough and I had to actually deconstruct a lot of things.

In ‘Raaz 3’, you have intimate scenes with both the leading ladies (Bipasha Basu and Esha Gupta). Who, according to you, was better?

Both, actually. (winks and laughs) with women, it’s always better to maintain a diplomatic stand.

What sort of expectations do you have from this film?

Lot of expectations. I hope this film is a huge, huge success. It will be one. It has already received a great response with the opening show. Theatres have been pre-booked across cities and towns, tickets are sold out for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Audiences have more faith in the film, and that’s great.

Raaz 3D': Bipasha Basu speaks about playing the dark Shanaya

She’s been called ‘unconventional’, ‘bohemian’, ‘bold’. In fact a lot of such ‘unconventional’ epithets have adorned the vocabulary of people whenever it has come to describing this gorgeous lady. But Bipasha Basu isn’t just your petite, dove-eyed, dusky heroine who is there as a mere accessory in a film.

Despite being a woman who was catapulted to fame, thanks to her bold role of a seductress and her numerous kissing and love-making scenes on screen, the actress admits being petrified whenever she has the herculean task of kissing a co-actor. Kissing a co-star, says Basu, “is terrible, scary, the worst thing in the world.” And in ‘Raaz 3’, where the actress will be seen kissing the quintessential kisser of Bollywood, Emraan Hashmi, she felt the pressure of performing well.

In a tete-a-tete with Ananya Bhattacharya of Zeenews.com, Bipasha Basu speaks about ‘Raaz 3’, her career so far, and all that goes into essaying a dark character.

Your debut was with a negative role – way back in 2001, with ‘Ajnabee’. How does it feel portraying one again?

I think it’s very challenging as an actor to dabble in a dark role because it’s very easy to be regular and simple and sweet – because that’s what we all are – we’re very regular human beings, besides being actors, in our normal space. And for a person like me, who lives a very very ordinary life, when I’m not working, it’s very exciting to be something which really challenges you and pushes you as a human being.

What about ‘Raaz 3’? How was the experience of playing Shanaya?

Excellent. I think every day was tough because it was exhausting to be that dark and I wanted to finish the film fast and get out of Shanaya. I was not very happy doing what I was during the process of making ‘Raaz 3’. It kind of was very demanding. I am generally a very happy person and to be very cut off from people, to stay not connected with people – it was not a very nice feeling. So I just wanted to finish the film and move on to something lighter or maybe go for a holiday!

After ‘Raaz’ and ‘Jism’, you’ve come a long way. ‘Raaz’ was your first commercial success, and there you were the victim. ‘Raaz 3’ sees you as the predator. Was it a conscious choice?

Yes, absolutely. I think you have to move forward. After ten years of being in the business, and doing all kinds of roles – thought-provoking, exciting, glamorous, de-glamorous – there comes a point of time when you realize that you are looking for something very unusual, never been seen in the Hindi film industry before: Shanaya is that.

You’ve worked in ‘Shob Charitro Kalponik’. How was it working with Rituparno Ghosh?

It’s probably the best film in my career, one of the most beautiful films that I’ve done. I loved the script of the film; I loved everything about it, it’s really beautiful. The story is a complex one, it explores the complexities of the man-woman relationship – a relationship between a husband and a wife. I’m very, very proud of the fact that my parents always wanted me to do a Bengali film, and I got to do such a beautiful one based on literature.

What after this?

After this, I’m acting in a film called ‘Aatma’, which is based on the supernatural again, but an extremely author-backed role – a fantastically, commercially potent film. So I’m looking for author-backed roles. It has to be commercially viable and entertaining, it shouldn’t be like an art-house creation. I want to do really human roles, and roles with meat – and one which comes across as a commercially entertaining package.

With the clock ticking fast for Bigg Boss 6 to invade the small screen space, there is a lot of speculation regarding the contestants who will be roped in for this season that is due to premiere on Colors this November (2012).
Rumour mills are abuzz with the news that this time around, two contestants among the 13/14 might be commoners. Our source says that a lot of wannabe celebs are trying their luck to get locked for three months in the Big Boss house this year.
As usual, the creatives of both the channel and the production house (Endemol) are sounding out a number of out-of-work celebs and upcoming talent. One such name doing the rounds is Salman Yusuff Khan. This winner of Dance India Dance is currently doing Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa along with Isha Sharvani.
The buzz also states that Rajev Paul, his ex-wife Delnaz Irani and Manish Goel may have also been contacted by the Bigg Boss team. It is also reported that American socialite and international reality show actress Kim Kardashian might also be part of the inmates this year.
With last year’s inmate, Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone turning a film actress with Jism 2 does Kim also have Bollywood plans? This is for everyone to wait and watch.
When we called up Rajev to get his side of the story, he remarked, “This is news to me, but I would be more than happy to be a part of this show, if invited.” We tried calling up Manish and Salman, but both were unavailable for comment. Delnaz also denied having been approached.
A source says that the inclusion of Rajev and Delnaz in the list of probables is but obvious for they have recently been divorced and thus makes for a good controversy.
We will keep a track on the further development.

Why Weren’t Housemates And Audience Contented With Bigg Boss5?

Most of the Housemates most especially those evicted before reaching the Grand Finale were left unsatisfied by the way how the fifth edition of the Bigg Boss show was conducted.
Also in the fifth season Audiences figured out that with every weekly eviction, a specific trend followed, the least controversial housemate who has had the negligible interaction in fights gets evicted after getting nominated for that week.
It became widely believed that contestant are getting evicted from the show as a result of not making headlines for the reality show.
Some News papers like  Zee news expressed dislike towards the show saying, “Barring a few educated and well-mannered celebrities, most of the Bigg Boss contestants have utterly failed to exercise self-restraint.
As the format of the show is such that they often fail to maintain their composure and mostly reveal a fake personality. “Abuses fly thick and fast in the house, whereas morality, ethos and ethics take a backseat. The fear of eviction makes them selfish and diplomatic, compels them to switch sides for personal gains, and indulge in propaganda”.
Shakti Kapoor who was evicted earlier in the show after surviving four week inside the house claimed, “People have a wrong notion that I am a bad guy. Bigg Boss people got me with 13 females because they also thought I will sneak into girls room at night and do something fishy. I respect women a lot,” the actor said.
He added that ,”But since I was not getting into anything like this or any fight or controversy I got evicted. I think there is something planned about my eviction. Everyone in the audience feels there is something wrong. I thought I would win the show and so did the people.”
Pooja Bedi who was evicted weeks later also stated in an interview that housemates are merely evicted on the basis of their controversial backgrounds and that the show is pre-scripted.
After Pooja Misrra’s unexpected exit more than half of the viewers stopped watching the show claiming that the house was getting boring by the week.Contrary to these outcomes, Pooja Misrra was soon sent back in as Andrew Symonds’ translator.
Evicted housemate Pooja  Bedi said about her re-entry, “Why else will they bring her in as a translator, she was fined for talking in English herself! She’s been brought back just for TRPs.”
Singer Raageshwari who left the show in October also claimed, “I am sure the channel decided to bring her back for entertainment value! It will certainly be interesting to see her act as Andrew’s interpreter,” Another ex-inmate
Shraddha Sharma stated, “There’s no one in the house now who’s giving masala to the show, that is why they found a new way to bring her back,”. In previous seasons of Bigg Boss a similar tactic was used to attract TRPs, Dolly Bindra and Kamaal R Khan were also asked to leave the show. However, to encash on their controversial image, Bigg Boss brought them back.
How do think the sixth season should be conducted?

Salman Khan wants you to join him on Bigg Boss 6

Salman Khan, who is riding high on the success of his fourth consecutive blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger, will soon be hitting our small screens at home with his reality TV show Bigg Boss 6 and this time he wants you to join him.
The show’s first look, which was unveiled on Tuesday night, invited the common man to be a part of the reality show.

People are being asked to send an SMS or log on to the website of the channel which airs Bigg Boss. They will then have to participate in a contest to appear on Bigg Boss 6.
Salman Khan has promised that this version of the controversial reality show will be will be ‘cleaner and friendlier’.
Bigg Boss sees celebrity contestants staying in a house for about three months, cut off from the outside world. They are overseen by a “mysterious person” known as ‘Bigg Boss’. This season, the focus will not be on stars and their tantrums, but about the people who are on the other side of the screen – members of the general public, and their values and morals.
According to reports, the changes in format were formalised at the behest of Salman Khan, after a spate of controversies in the earlier seasons of the show which housed adult film star Sunny Leone, Raja Choudhary (accused of beating his wife), female dacoit Seema Parihar and starlet Dolly Bindra.
This will be Salman’s third time as the Bigg Boss host which has been earlier hosted by celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty.
The superstar, who had co-hosted the last season with friend and actor Sanjay Dutt, will be hosting the show alone this time. The show is likely to go on air in October. (With PTI inputs)

kareena-kapoor-gets-the-brandwagon-for-heroine

Women-centric films have caught the right attention in recent times, thanks to unique content and strong roles. But for Heroine, Kareena Kapoor has gone a step ahead and managed to bring as many as eight brands on board said to be the most for any female-oriented Hindi movie so far.

According to industry sources, an estimate of at least Rs.20 crore of brand-spends will be blocked for promotions of Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine, releasing September 21.

Lakme, Head and Shoulders and Monarch Universal are the brands Kareena endorses and have associated with the film, apart from others like Cera, Rupa, Jealous21, Sugar Free and Cocoberry which have come on board for in-film integration and various media associations.

"Heroine is a women-oriented film and I am happy that brands today are open to associate with such films which was never the case before. The trend is changing and I'm glad to have instigated it", said Kareena, adding that Bhandarkar "has pushed the envelope to bring out a strong performance from me".

Lakme is launching Heroine branded make-up under the Absolute range, endorsed by Kareena, and apparel brand Jealous21 will introduce a special clothing line inspired by the clothes worn by Kareena in the movie, which narrates the behind-the-scenes life of an actors.

"Heroine has an author-backed role for Kareena and Madhur's zeal to make it the way he had envisioned has prompted many brands to see an opportunity worth associating," said Shikha Kapur, executive director Marketing, Studios, Disney UTV.

"Even though it's a heroine-led film, because of its sheer content and Kareena's strong brand recall, we have successfully managed to have key brands on board. The product placement is integrated with the film's story line in a manner that is inherent to the narrative and accelerates the story further," added Kapur.
Earlier, women-oriented film like Fashion and Aisha tied up with popular brands.

Punjabi boy Vipul Mehta wins Indian Idol 6

It was a tough call - three boys, all from Punjab, all excellent singers with a great audience connect. But it is Vipul Mehta from Amritsar, who bagged the "Indian Idol 6" title in Mumbai on Saturday night at a glittering grand finale.
The 21-year-old pipped Devendra Pal Singh, 17, and Amit Kumar, 20, for the winner's trophy, a cash prize of Rs.50 lakh from Sony channel, a Nissan Micra car, a Suzuki Hayate bike, Rs.3 lakh from Max Life Insurance and a contract to record his own music album.

"I am really very happy. I thank god for bringing me where I stand today. I would like to thank the audience too for supporting me. I am overwhelmed to see my grandfather's dream coming true," said an emotional Mehta after the win.
Mehta had earlier also participated in singing reality show "Voice of India - Season 2" in 2008, but couldn't make it to the top three. This time he was lucky.
He faced stiff and neck-to-neck competition as both the other contenders had equally powerful, melodious and heartwarming voices.
The young and talented singers displayed their ability to sing all genres during the show, but there had to be one winner.
The finale was a starry affair with judges Anu Malik, Salim Merchant, Sunidhi Chauhan and Asha Bhosle, who were in their true spirits, cheering for all the contestants.
While Sunidhi, Salim and Asha performed with the three contestants, Sunidhi and Asha also enthralled audience with their stand alone performances.

with Kareena on the stage.

The finalists paid tribute to the three generations of Bollywood's Kapoor clan. While Amit sang Raj Kapoor's song "Kehta hai joker", Devender sang Rishi's "Bachna aae haseeno" and Vipul crooned Ranbir's "Sadda haq".

Bigg Boss Season 6: Salman Changes the Rule, No More Drama Only ‘Family Friendly’ People in the Show

From drama queen Veena Malik, Sambhavna Seth, Sherlyn Chopra, Kashmira Shah, Rakhi Sawant, Sunny Leone, Seema Parihar, Dolly Bindra to Raja Choudhry, Kamal Rashid Khan, Dolly Bindra and several others shot to fame with the show.
However, it appears that the show has now closed doors for such contestants who apparently thrive on controversies.
As per the new rule for the upcoming season, only those participants who have family friendly image will be chosen for the show.
“Now, only those participants who have a family friendly image will be chosen,” Bollywood Mantra quoted an insider as saying. “Fights and scandals won’t be the only entry ticket to the house. We’ll soon run a contest and anyone can get lucky and enter the show.”
”Bigg Boss has so far catered to the voyeuristic needs of Indian audiences. But there is bad news for those in the film and television industry who thrive on controversies. Not so long ago, these people were prime contenders for the show,” the insider added.
The show will now include ordinary people, who are both genuine and sensible to be presented to the television audience.
The new rule is the initiative of Bollywood actor and show host Salman Khan.
“It was a joint decision between Salman and the broadcasters to clean up Bigg Boss 6,” Bollywood Mantra quoted the source as saying. “Salman has become a very big star today and has a huge fan following, especially among kids. It works for him and the broadcasters to get more eyeballs.”
Earlier in June, it was reported that American reality star Kim Kardashian, along with some other international celebs have been approached for the show.
Well, only time will tell if the new move will grab more eyeballs and goodwill to the show or invite fresh controversies!

All You Bips And Kats Beware! Sunny Leone Is Here To Replace You

Riding high on the success of erotic thriller ‘Jism 2′ Sunny Leone, a ‘veteran’ porn star and Bollywood newbie, wants to establish herself as a successful Bollywood mainstream actress. This sultry diva wants to play different types of roles in the future.
Sunny says, “My full concentration is now on Bollywood. I want to do different and all kinds of roles, especially playing meaningful characters. I want to establish myself as a successful mainstream actress. In order to become successful in Bollywood, for next two-three years I will stay on in India as I want to give my hundred percent.”
Being named one of the top 12 porn stars in the world by popular glamour magazine Maxim in 2010, a rare feat, is one of high points of her career.
Born to Punjabi parents in Ontario, Canada, Sunny is one of the biggest superstars of the porn industry for over a decade.
Landing up in the Bhatt camp
Veteran Bollywood producer, director and screenwriter Mahesh Bhatt spotted Sunny Leone when she was participating in the reality show “Bigg Boss 5″ and offered her a role in ‘Jism 2′, the sequel to 2003 thriller ‘Jism’.
Sunny portrayed a porn star named Izna in her debut film and won rave reviews for her performance. She is not surprised when people compare her image as an actress and that of a porn star.
When asked whether she is miffed at people overlooking her acting skills and focusing only on her porn status, the sexy siren said, “Everybody can have their own perception and their own way to look at everything. I can’t change that.”
Sunny, who has reiterated time and again that she is not ashamed of being a porn actress added, “There will be people who won’t like me and there are people who have given me love and support. Since I’m an actress, people should judge me according to my acting skills.”
She is fine with the fact that her background was helpful in bagging the role.
Sunny says, “Actually they were looking for an actress who was comfortable with her body, okay with erotic scene, and didn’t have any problem in projecting herself as a porn star and that’s where I come in.”

Sunny Leone’s Husband Approves All Her Scripts

Daniel Weber & Sunny Leone
Sunny Leone and her hubby Daniel Weber share a good camaraderie. They’ve been married for over a year now, post a courtship of five years.
Daniel, who is a guitarist from Los Angeles, is now Sunny’s business manager and heads their joint production company. “No script offered to me is approved without Daniel’s permission. I do not sign any contract without making him read it,” says Sunny. Like Sunny, even Daniel has acted in adult films and now produces them.
He is very protective of Sunny, he says, adding, “In an Indian society, it is taboo to be in such a profession (adult films) but we love each other. I don’t have to deal with the tag of being a porn star or my wife being one. I own the production company and we share the best relationship. We are friends, business partners and together 24×7,” says Daniel.
Sunny’s Bollywood debut has kept Daniel busy for over a few months now. “I did not understand the script when I read it first though it was specifically written in English for me to understand. Daniel read it before to confirm it,” shares Sunny. The actress says if it weren’t for Daniel, she wouldn’t have been here. Are they planning to venture into B-Town as producers, now that Sunny’s made her debut here as an actor? “I don’t know,” he says, but adds that he isn’t too keen on quitting the adult film industry as of now.
